What is confined spaces training?
Confined spaces training teaches workers how to identify the hazards associated with confined spaces and apply safe working procedures before, during and after entering these areas.
A confined space can present serious risks because of factors such as limited access and exit, hazardous atmospheres, insufficient oxygen, toxic gases, fire, engulfment, water, machinery or other physical hazards.
Training helps workers understand these risks, recognise when a space may require controlled entry, use appropriate PPE and safety equipment, follow safe entry and exit procedures, and respond appropriately to an emergency.
FTS Safety's confined spaces course is aligned to South African Unit Standard 15034: Work in Confined Spaces on Construction Sites and is delivered as a one-day course.
Who should attend confined spaces training?
Confined spaces training is suitable for workers, contractors and other personnel who may be required to work in or around confined spaces as part of their duties.
This may include employees working with:
- Storage tanks and process tanks
- Tankers
- Silos
- Manholes
- Sewers and drainage systems
- Vessels
- Construction sites and trenches
- Industrial plants
- Manufacturing facilities
- Water and wastewater infrastructure
- Maintenance and shutdown projects
- Other areas where confined-space hazards may be present
Employers should assess the hazards associated with their workplace and determine the training, supervision, equipment and procedures required for the work being performed.
